Gardens… On The Roof?
Attention all Londoners, and those moving to London! Gardens don’t necessarily have to be set next to, or beside your property. Rooftop gardens are a growing trend in London, with hundreds of new gardens popping up every single year. A recent report by the BBC highlights the fact that rooftop gardens are springing up all over London – from Hackney to Oxford Street.
When you think about it, a rooftop garden really does make sense! The price of space in London really is at a premium – so why waste the roof of your home or your apartment block? Turn it into a garden – a place where you can lounge around and enjoy the smell of fresh cut grass, and of course fragrant flowers.
The emergence of these gardens is no accident or surprise; Boris Johnson’s “London Plan” from 2011 included a target to increase the amount of green space in London by 5% by 2030. An additional 5% of green space will then be targeted as we move towards 2050. On that basis, we can only expect rooftop gardens to become even more widespread.
Local gardeners have reported an increase in the number of rooftop gardens that they’re having to tend to for clients – and high street stalwarts like John Lewis have even got in on the act. John Lewis’s flagship Oxford Street store now plays host to its very own rooftop garden, part of the company’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
So when you’re packing your belongings and you’re thinking about leaving flowerpots, spades and plant seeds behind because your new property doesn’t have a garden – stop and think for a minute!
