What is a moving volume calculator?
A moving volume calculator adds together the approximate space occupied by the furniture, boxes and other belongings you plan to move. It gives you an initial inventory and a total in cubic metres. Select quantities for common items, then use custom dimensions for anything that is not listed. The result is a planning estimate, not a removal quotation.
Why measure a house move in cubic metres?
A cubic metre, written as m³, is the volume of a cube measuring one metre in each direction. Volume helps describe the amount of space your belongings occupy. For a rectangular custom item, multiply width by height by depth in metres. For example, 1.2 m × 0.8 m × 0.5 m equals 0.48 m³ before any packing allowance.
How accurate is this moving volume calculator?
The result depends on how closely your belongings match the provisional item values and whether your inventory is complete. Two sofas or wardrobes can have very different dimensions. Packing, dismantling, irregular shapes and specialist items can also affect the final assessment. Your property size provides reminders only: it does not determine the total. A partial move may have a small volume even when it comes from a large home.
How we estimate furniture volume
Each listed item has a provisional approximate m³ value, multiplied by the quantity you select. Bed values include a mattress. Cupboards, wardrobes and bookcases exclude their contents, which you should add separately as boxes. These figures are not exact furniture measurements. If a standard item is a poor match, use a custom measurement instead of counting both entries.
Why boxes can make a big difference
Clothes, kitchenware, books, toys and cupboard contents may account for many cartons. Add small, medium, large, book and wardrobe cartons separately. The listed box value represents the carton with its contents, so do not add those same contents again as loose items. Box sizes vary; use the custom-item option if you know your actual packed dimensions.
Does dismantling furniture reduce its volume?
Dismantling can change how furniture is packed and arranged, but the effect depends on the item and the protection required. This calculator does not automatically apply a dismantling discount. For a custom item, use its packed external dimensions where known. If you are measuring an unpacked object, you can choose the optional wrapping allowance. Ask your surveyor about items that need dismantling or reassembly.
Using your estimate for UK, European and international moves
The calculation stays the same whichever move type you choose. For UK moves, discuss access, parking and packing with your surveyor. For European moves and international moves outside Europe, also discuss your destination and any additional packing or destination requirements. The online total is not a confirmed packed shipping volume. For storage only, use it as a starting point for discussing collection, protection and storage duration.

Does this calculator give me a removals price?
No. It estimates volume only and does not calculate prices. A quotation needs a professional assessment of the move.
Should I include everything in the house?
Include only the belongings you are taking. Check the loft, garage, shed, garden and any items stored elsewhere. Do not include built-in appliances unless you are moving them.
What happens if an item needs specialist assessment?
Specialist items are highlighted. Where there is no provisional volume, the item is recorded but excluded from the numeric total, and the estimate is marked incomplete. Ask a surveyor to assess it, or replace the entry with a custom measurement. A measurement still does not confirm handling or transport suitability.
Will my inventory be sent with a survey enquiry?
No. The CSV download is a standalone resource for your own records. The calculator does not send your inventory to Central Moves or attach it to an enquiry.
Will the calculator remember my items when I leave?
No. Your entries stay only in the current page while it is open. Download the inventory before refreshing or leaving if you want to keep a copy.
